OT: Favourite hotel in the world?
Om Puri: I love holidaying in Vancouver, Canada with my family,
OT: Last visited?
Om Puri: My last visit was in 2006, when I was there shooting for Gurdas Mann’s film Yaariyan.
OT: The experience?
Om Puri: The hotel itself is very charming; its façade is reminiscent of an old English castle. What I like about it are the stylish rooms. They’re very Victorian, but understated at the same time and very comfortable. Also, the hotel is centrally located, in downtown Vancouver, and next to the touristy and quaint Gastown, which makes getting around very convenient. I’ve been to Vancouver many times, and over the years, the beauty of the place has always fascinated me. It has mountains and the sea, and the city itself is on different levels. And it is so very clean!
OT: The food?
Om Puri: Surprisingly, the food was nothing to write home about. It was the usual bland Continental fare, which I didn’t find particularly exciting. So we decided not to eat any meals there apart from breakfast. I can’t survive for long without Punjabi food, and luckily for me, Vancouver has a huge Punjabi population, with a Punjabi food joint on every corner, so I feel right at home. Vancouver also has plenty of Oriental food options, especially Japanese. Again, every corner has a sushi joint, which my wife and son love.
OT: The hotel’s ‘USP’?
Om Puri: I would have to say its rooms. Typically, hotel rooms tend to have a sameness about them and can even be pretty claustrophobic — something that really gets to me. I like the fact that a lot of thought and care has gone into the décor of these rooms, making them very unique. Also, each of the rooms here is very spacious, a quality that appeals to me. And the furniture is absolutely exquisite.
OT: Repeat visit?
Om Puri: I’d go there every year if I could, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been possible. As of now, there are no concrete plans to visit either. I’m shooting in various other locations at the moment, but if anyone wants to shoot a film in Vancouver, I am willing to reduce my price by 10 per cent!
