OT: Favourite hotel in the world? OT: Last visited and for how long?
Anoushka Shankar: Hotel Colon (www.hotel-colon.net), Mataro, Spain.
OT: The experience?
Anoushka Shankar: Everything about that hotel was lovely, but there were two things that really stand out in my mind. One was the view of the ocean from the rooms. I especially had an incredible view since I was in a suite in a corner. So while my front balcony had the amazing but rather standard view in front, I also had a second, slightly smaller, balcony which looked down the length of the beach, giving me an incredible view of miles of sand and bright water.
The second thing was the room itself. It was a beautiful suite with loads of light from the screen doors, and an unusual amount of space for a European hotel. It was done up in rich creams and off-whites and felt very luxurious. There was a large walk-in closet which led to a massive, perfect bathroom. The bed was, of course, soft and wonderful, but there were also extra touches like sensor lights that would go off after you left the room, and clever lighting that made the room look even lovelier.
OT: The food?
Anoushka Shankar: I didn’t get to eat too many meals here, but what I did sample was fantastic. I remember having delicious fresh fish that was lightly steamed with butter and lemon — it sounds simple but it was really so well made. I also loved the salad options, because there are a few vegetarians in my band, and Spain can often be a difficult place for them to find good eating options.
OT: USP?
Anoushka Shankar: Overall, I’d say it’s a very complete hotel, offering fantastic service, beautiful rooms, full services for businesstravellers, a beautiful spa and a great restaurant, but with the added benefit of an oceanfront location and a comfortable, homey feel.
