First for Mumbai and also a first for India, the Taj Mahal Hotel has secured image trademark rights for its outstanding architecture from the Government of India. The iconic hotel opened on 16 December 1903 and ever since then it has been an iconic  symbol of Mumbai as well as Indian hospitality in general. The hotel’s striking red-tiled Florentine Gothic dome stands out as it sits on the edge of the Arabian Sea.  The architecture of the hotel was closely modelled after the famous Victoria Terminus railway station, now known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

This development also celebrates the 114-year long journey of the iconic hotel. With this, now Taj Mahal Hotel joins the company of other easily recognisable buildings around the world whose Intellectual Property Rights are protected. And why not? After all, the hotel has been a part of India’s history, from Lord Mountbatten announcing India’s independence from its steps to being the only hotel in India to have electricity at the time of its inauguration!
