With the passing away of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the country has entered a period of mourning. Thai locals will hence be dressed in black as a sign of respect. While tourists needn’t follow suit, they should choose muted colours to show solidarity with their hosts. Also, they must keep abreast of updates from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT): Many attractions will remain closed till further notice. Cultural festivals such as the Yi Peng Chiang Mai and New Year celebrations stand cancelled. Also, indulging in boisterous activities should be avoided. Thailand being a popular wedding destination, the TAT India director has also advised shifting functions indoors. Temple of the Emerald Buddha, where the King’s body will lie for an undisclosed duration, will remain open. See TATnews.org.
