The renowned Rubin Museum Of Art and the International Center of Photography, both based in New York, are collaborating to show Steve McCurry’s photographs of India in a museum for the first time. Thirty-seven stunning images, many of them an iconic part of the award-winning photographer’s fabled artistry and some never seen by the public before, document McCurry’s travels in India since the late 1970s. The evocative combination of portraits, landscapes, historical sites and vignettes from the lives of ordinary people, printed in McCurry’s NYC studio, demonstrate his extraordinary ability to connect with his subjects and capture unguarded and aesthetically beautiful moments having a universal appeal. The photographs on view include classics from his early projects (the kinetic India by Rail and the life-affirming Monsoon), and will be complemented by curated exhibits from the Rubin Museum’s collection of Himalayan art, video interviews with specialists, and an audio guide for the exhibition with a commentary from McCurry himself.
