Delhi airport collected national top honours at this year’s Skytrax — World Airport Awards, and also global recognition as the world’s most improved airport. IGIA authorities are apparently extremely pleased at this compliment, despite rising costs to the customer. Meanwhile, Seoul’s Incheon International Airport has inched up from third place last year to rule the world, leapfrogging over favourites, Singapore Changi and Hong Kong. In this overall ranking, Delhi, placed 62nd — way behind Bangkok, for example, at 25 — is set to post a loss of Rs 9-10 billion. A 334% hike in airport charges, approved by the government but yet to kick in, may not be sufficient to pull the airport back in the black.
