Only diehard Beatles fans know of the decrepit Chaurasi Kutia ashram in Rishikesh’s Rajaji National Park, where the Fab Four, then followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, worked prolifically on 48 songs, 20 of which went on to be recorded, until their fallout with the high-flying godman after seven weeks. The site was abandoned ignominiously after the lease expired in the ’90s, and is unappealing despite Pan Trinity Das’ graffiti tribute. But Uttarakhand Tourism authorities have promised a revamp of the ashram, which will include a museum on the band. We live in hope!
