Bangalore City railway station scores a first with wi-fi

The Indian tech hub of Bengaluru becomes the first city in the country to have wi-fi at a railway station. The Indian Railways pilot project to provide high-speed Internet connectivity to passengers starts with Bangalore City railway station, as per a release from the Press Information Bureau. The service is powered by ‘RailWire’, the retail broadband distribution model of RailTel Corporation of India, a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Railways. RailTel has the task of providing wi-fi facility at A1 and A category stations around the country.

At Bangalore City railway station, wi-fi will be available to passengers free of charge for the first 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the user needs to purchase scratch cards from the Wi-Fi Help Desk. These cost Rs 25 for 30 minutes and Rs 35 for one hour, and are valid for 24 hours. Additional browsing time can also be purchased online using credit/debit cards.
