Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh: The fort, now an archaeological museum, dates back to 8^th century. Also home to Buddhist and Jain temples, the fort has weathered many changes from being ruled by the Pal dynasty to the Mughals to the rebellion of 1857.

Hampi, Karnataka: With 500 plus monuments, Hampi is one of the most famous heritage sites in India. Remains of temples, baths, market streets, palaces, among endless others make Hampi a traveller’s delight.

Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi: One of the best preserved Mughal monuments, Humayun’s Tomb is strongly influenced by Persian architecture. The site holds tombs of Humayun’s descendants and hence, it is also known as necropolis of the Mughal dynasty. The massive red sandstone structure is a must-visit when in the capital city.

Mehrangarh Fort, Rajasthan: The fort is the best example of the work and skills of Jodhpuri sculptors. The fort, situated on a 150m high hill, is the most famous tourist attraction of Jodhpur—even whole of Rajasthan. The very well-preserved fort proudly shows off the huge courtyards of several palaces and also the battle scars—cannon balls hits on the gates of the fort.

Old Goa, Goa: The land of sun, sand and surf is also home to the country’s best Portuguese heritage sites. The site consists of many churches dating back to the time of Portuguese conquests—the famous ones being the Se Cathedral and Basilica of Bom Jesus.Many of these churches have now become museums—a must-visit for architecture enthusiasts.
