The Champakkulam Moolam Vallam Kali (‘vallam kali’ means ‘boat race’) takes place on the river Pamba, in the Malayalam month of mithunam (roughly June/July). Watching the spectators is in itself an experience, as the most enthusiastic among them climb the trees for ‘balcony seats’. As the day reaches high noon, boats in various categories like the chundan (snake boat), veppu, iruttu kuthi, churulan and others from nearby regions assemble at the starting point. The snake boat, of course, is the most fascinating.
