Indeed, Monument Valley Park (www.navajonationparks.org/htm/monumentvalley.htm), established 51 years ago to protect local archaeological and natural resources, is controlled by the tribal government. As such, it’s a little ironic that the magical red rock landscape has been defined as much by American cowboys as by western Indians. Tours, however, offer a swell introduction to the Native American culture with activities ranging from shopping for traditional crafts and jewellery to jeep rides that explore the far-out rock formations.
