OT: Which is your favourite hotel in the world?
Rohit Sharma: That would have to be the Long Beach (from €175; longbeachmauritius.com) in Mauritius. It wasn’t the most extravagant hotel I’ve ever stayed at but it was the best trip I’ve ever had. I visited in June for about a week, which was too short! A bunch of us decided to go away together but half wanted to go to the beach while the other half wanted cooler weather, so we settled on Mauritius because it rains in June but the rain is sporadic and it’s about 18–19°C during the day, which was great because everyone got what they wanted.

OT: So the outdoors were more fun than staying in?
Rohit Sharma:  Well, the suite had a view of the ocean that I could wake up to every day! It had an incredible balcony. But yes, the weather was amazing! They have this huge private white-sand beach, plus two pools, including an infinity pool with lounge chairs in the water. They have a great range of water sports too — kayak­ing, glass-boat rides, snorkelling, banana boats, parasailing… And they have the nicest bar, right by the sea.

OT: Indoor highlights to match?
Rohit Sharma: They have restaurants with every cuisine you could ask for and, I’m not kidding, I had the best Indian food there. They have an Italian restaurant where I had the most tasty spaghetti — tomato basil. Sounds simple, but you’ve got to try it to see what I mean. Their sushi was exquisite. The salmon sashimi was one of the best I’ve had. If you’re a fan of massages, I would highly recommend the chocolate massage too.

OT: So there’s something for everyone?
Rohit Sharma: Yes! It’s a great getaway for both couples and families. The hotel staff are so warm. The property is so big and so beautiful, it truly has a little of everything. A week really wasn’t enough. Mauritius is mistaken as mostly a couples retreat, but I’d honestly love to take a family trip to Long Beach.
