You might not be able to cold-shoulder the wooden exteriors of Smokey’s BBQ and Grill while walking around Cyberhub in Gurgaon. So, go ahead and give it chance because you will certainly not regret having a meal here as the place and the dishes give you a feeling of eating at a barbeque restaurant abroad. The interiors have been kept minimal unlike some of the new cafes in town where the walls scream for attention. The not-so-dark décor with not-so-loud music perfectly complement the tasty fare.

So my evening, after a tiring day at work, started with a classic cocktail John’s Maltini, named after the friendly bartender John, at Smokey’s BBQ and Grill. The single malt whisky with fresh green apple tasted extremely refreshing. For starters, I chose charred chicken skewers — deboned meat seasoned with hung curd, basil and a hint of lemon. Next to arrive were prawns and calamari sautéed with garlic and coriander— finished with prawn stock. Smokey’s BBQ and Grill also serves six distinctive sauces with its appetizers. The basic ones are mustard, tomato and chilli sauce. The obvious one is barbeque sauce. And the unique ones are chipotle and atomic. The atomic sauce is a non-vegetarian one as it’s made of fish anchovies. For the second round of drinks, John made me Smokey’s Margarita which had smoked pineapple, tequila, triple sec and jalapeños. Now this one is what I would recommend to anyone listening in, a well-balanced drink combining the sweetness of pineapple with the heat from the jalapeños.

Diet thoughts went on a holiday as we tried some of the other offerings from Smokey’s BBQ and Grill; next in line was some really decent and succulent chicken breast smoked in reshampatti chilli and thyme with chicken jus. And if you are feeling that wee bit guilty, then take comfort from the fact that everything here is grilled and not doused with in typical desi masalas. Smokey’s also has burger sliders comprising four assorted mini burgers with a variety of fillings – curried veg, pulled tenderloin, lamb and six chilli chicken. After demolishing the meat platters, a little voice coaxed me to try out their vegetarian food too. So, I went ahead and tasted the peppered cottage cheese with veggies. The pan seared soft and huge chunk of cottage cheese with barbeque veggies was absolutely perfect to end my main course.

With my constant search for finding the second best place for banoffee pie (you know the first and the best place); I tried Smokey’s banoffee pie for dessert. Umm, maybe I should have gone for something chocolaty.
