In the last decade or so, stargazing and astrophotography has evolved into a popular activity among a growing section of our generation, making night sky tourism a craze among travellers. In this light, the Rajasthan government’s initiative to promote night-sky tourism is the first of its kind in India. While the project has been launched in all 33 districts of Rajasthan, the Sambhar, India’s largest saline lake, is considered as one of the best locations for star gazing and astrophotography. The lake was declared a Ramsar site in the ’90s as it attracts millions of migratory birds every year.

Around 80 kms from the state capital Jaipur, Sambhar’s catchment area is spread over more than 5,000 sq kms, and includes numerous salt pans and other lakes such as the Naliasar.

While March to September is ideal for stargazing and astrophotography, August is perhaps the best since the monsoon washes the sky and increases visibility.

A word of caution here – if you’d like to enjoy the night sky, it is a good idea to get adequate rest during the daytime. Stargazing begins only after 8:30 or 9 pm as the sky becomes progressively mesmerizing with the onset of night. The Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy and other constellations gradually become prominent even to the naked eye, easily making it a spellbinding experience. Often people spend the entire night under the sky complete solitude and end the enthralling experience with the dawn at the lake.

Sambhar not only offers a clear view of stars and galaxies but also offers other unique experiences like the traditional salt-making process. Take a tour of these in colonial era train coaches running on a metre-gauge line in and around the salt pan.

You could also visit the Shakambhari Devi temple, or explore birdwatching.
